Northants Mens 'B' Versus Bucks Mens 'B' - 18/01/09 Match Report

Bucks mens teams couldn't have had a more difficult start to the new 2009 season playing away to the 2008 A and B Region 5 winners.

The B's had Mike Chapell making his Bucks County debut, a 2nd debut for Chris Willoughby, with Darren White also lining up for the B's back after a near full season's absence. Jimmy Wharton, John Clavey, Scott "wildcard" Rutter, Franco Marsala, Jon Loveday, David Larner, Dan Wilkins and Dane Tuttlebee completed the lineup.

Bucks got off to the perfect start with Jimmy Wharton and John Clavey taking the opening 2 frames. This was followed by wins for Mike Chappell, David Larner, Dan Wilkins, Darren White and a great clearance by Dane Tuttlebee after his opponent's blank break. Bucks took the first session 7-4 and the noise levels increased as the sense of an upset was certainly on the cards.

Bucks tremendous form continued in the second session as wins for Jimmy Wharton, John Clavey, Scott Rutter, Franco Marsala, Jon Loveday and David Larner saw Bucks 12-5 up and one point, but finally had to settle for a 6-5 session win and 13-9 overall.

All the teams were around their respective tables and really enjoying the day. This created a fantastic team spirit and atmosphere. Shouts of "C'mon the Bucks" and high 5's all round... then the food came out.

After a 30 minute interlude, it took Bucks a while to regroup. Northants made 5 changes to their team and it certainly made a difference taking the 3rd session 7-4 with only John Clavey, Jon Loveday, Dane Tuttlebee and Chris Willoughby managing a win for the Bucks.

The match was finely balanced at 17-16 to Bucks going into the final session, but Northants soon took the lead for the first time in the match. Only Jon Loveday, Franco Marsala and Darren White could put up any resistance to Northants fightback and they eventually ran out 8-3 in the 4th session and 24-20 overall.

POM award went to John Clavey for his 3/4 and an excellent near faultless performance. Special mention also to Jon Loveday for his 3/4 after losing in the first session. A great turnaround.

Although the match was lost in the end, Bucks certainly made Northants sweat and work hard for their win. It was always going to be a tough start to the season and this result is by no means a disgrace. There is still everything to play for for honours in the region and this team can definitely be pushing for a top 2 finish, if not top. Already a good squad with quality players returning next match. Bring it on!
