Bucks Mens B v Northants Mens B ~ Match Report
Posted by Barlow on March 10 2010 17:42:13
County PoolBucks B’s needed to put the disappointment of last month’s game behind them when they entertained arch rivals Northants at the Herald. With another strong squad to choose from, there were again some difficult choices to be made regarding the starting line-up, an issue I’m sure we’ll have throughout the season. Competition for places should be seen as a positive thing and it’s up to individual players to cement their place in the first eleven with strong performances on the table.

On to the game, it’s too early in the season to pitch this as a “must win”, but we came out of the blocks as if our season depended on it. After losing the first frame, Bucks rattled off 7 on the bounce with wins from Kenny Riddell, Scott Rutter, Franco Marsala, Dane Tuttlebee, John Hardaker, John Clavey and Chris Cox with Tony Haggarty adding a further win to take the session 8-3. What a start...

The second session was much closer but Bucks still found themselves 5-3 up at one point and 13-6 overall, with wins from Kenny Riddell, Scott Rutter, John Hardaker, John Clavey and Chris Cox. Northants took the last 3 frames to take the session 6-5, but Bucks were still 13-9 up in the match.

The third session was the turning point in the game. Northants took 8 of the first 9 frames. Together with the last 3 frames of the previous session, Northants had taken 11 from 12 frames and had turned the match 17-14 up. After such a great start, the match was slipping away. Bucks fought back with the last 2 frames of the session thanks to Tony Haggarty and Daren White, but it was disappointing from such a strong start, Bucks were 17-16 down going into the final session.

It was a tense start to the 4th session with games being traded 1 for 1. Kenny Riddell and Scott Rutter won, but Bucks were still 20-18 down. Then John Hardaker, John Clavey, Chris Cox and a first win for Nick Bowden put Bucks 22-20 up, guaranteed the draw and a frame away from the win. It was up to Tony Haggarty and Daren White, but both lost and the match was drawn 22-22.

John Hardaker won the player of the match award for the second match running with 3/4 and fittingly, John Clavey, Kenny Riddell and Chris Cox again all won 3/4 for the second match running, joined this time by Scott Rutter with 3/4.

4 or 5 players are delivering on the table and have produced consistent performances in the first 2 matches. As I said at the start of this report, with a “squad” to choose from, it is up to individual players to cement their place in the team. These players are fast becoming the backbone of the side but we need more than 4 or 5 players to perform if we are to turn these draws into wins.

Congratulations to the Bunnies with another expected big win, 31-13, but a bit of a surprise with the A’s going down 25-19 after a strong start. Unlucky lads. Put it right next time.

With the home game against Warwickshire postponed next month, the next match is one of the toughest in the calendar away to Worcestershire in April. It’s a test we must pass if we have designs on qualifying for Great Yarmouth again.
